MEA Energy Association has a rich history dating back to 1905 when it was known as the Midwest Gas Association (MGA). Originally, a small group of local gas companies came together in Des Moines, Iowa to share ideas and solutions. Over the years, MEA has grown significantly and now serves nearly 100 gas and electric energy delivery companies.
Throughout its history, MEA has been at the forefront of industry developments. In 1938, the Natural Gas Act was passed, giving the federal government authority over interstate pipelines' rates. In 1992, MEA played a crucial role in developing resources to help its members comply with the Operator Qualification (OQ) Rule. MEA became the first association to create consensus-based tests and learning materials for the entire gas industry.
In 1998, MEA expanded its membership to include electric-only distribution companies and changed its name to Midwest ENERGY Association (MEA). The association continued to evolve and offer valuable education and resources for both gas and electric industries.
In recent years, MEA launched initiatives like Energetic Women, a group that prepares women for leadership roles in operations and engineering within the energy industry. They also introduced EnergyU, an online platform that offers over 430 training and testing courses for various industry topics.
Today, MEA is known as MEA Energy Association and remains committed to empowering the energy industry through education, leadership development, and industry connections. With its extensive history and expertise, MEA continues to provide practical solutions and powerful connections for professionals in the field.
